HIRSCH M. PRENANT G. and POULIQUEN Y. INSERM lJ.86, H&e1 Dieu. Pari.v (France) Puroose. The objective was to determine the supramolecular organization of the cornea1 stroma extracellular matrix (ECM) and the changes which occured during the acquisition of transparency. Methods. Mature corneas and chicken embryo corneas were used. Samples were frozen against a metal block cooled at -18O”C, transferred on a cold stage of a freeze-etch unit, cleaved, etched and rotary replicated in vacuum. Results. Mature corneas displayed type I collagen Bbrils with high and low molecular density regions and microfibrillar subunits of 8nm in diameter. Interfibrillar bridges with globular entities linked adjacent fibrils. Filaments with globules were found running along the tibtils. Networks of beaded microfilaments with 100-I IOnm periodicity were often encountered. These macromolecular assemblies were suggestive of proteoglycans, type IX and type VI collagens, respectively. The secondary developing stroma showed disordered arrays of collagen fibrils and interfibrillar bonds which organized during the maturation. Sheets of closely associated tine, long filaments, ressembling type IV collagen were encountered. The beaded microfilaments were also present. Conclusion2 Used in conjonction with other approaches, this method should offer a very useful aid in the understanding of the interactions of ECM macromolecules in the comeal stroma.

UV radiation and the Eye
It has been said that aside from skin, the organ most susceptible to sunlight-induced damage is the eye. In view of this, it can be argued that the optical industry and the eye care professional have an obligation, or at least, an opportunity, to educate the public more widely on the dangers of ocular exposure to UV and how best to achieve protection. This article summarises our understanding o...
متن کاملThe effect of polar copolymers in protein absorption on contact lenses on 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA)
For the purpose of increasing the permeability to oxygen and equilibrium water content in contact lenses, polar copolymers with nonionic monomers such as 2-hydroxyethle methacrylate(HEMA) Is used. By adding the polar monomers to (HEMA), the permeability to oxygen and equilibrium with water content is increased and also the absorption of proteins on lens surface is changed. In this research, the...
متن کاملThe study of Lysozyme adsorption onto 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylates and Silicon Hydrogel Contact Lenses
In order to increase the water content and the oxygen permeability of hydrogels used in themanufacture of contact lenses, the polar monomer Silicon Hydrogel Contact Lenses (SHCL), and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) were copolymerized with the hydrogels. Due to the presence ofpolar monomers in the conventional contact lenses, the major component of the human tear, lysozyme is extensively adso...
متن کاملSynthesis and Application of Heterocyclic as ultraviolet Absorbers
The lifespan of organic coatings is reduced in outdoor applications by attacks of solar radiation, oxygen and atmospheric pollutants. Degradation of coating and recoating introduce pollutants into the environment. For solvent base coatings like alkyd paints volatile organic compounds (VOC) are main source of pollution. Undesirable mechanical, physical and chemical consequences of the resulting ...
متن کاملPrevention of UV-induced damage to the anterior segment using class I UV-absorbing hydrogel contact lenses.
PURPOSE To determine whether class I ultraviolet (UV) light-blocking contact lenses prevent UV-induced pathologic changes in a rabbit model. METHODS Twelve rabbits were assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups (n = 4), as follows: senofilcon A (class I UV blocking) contact lenses; lotrafilcon A contact lenses (no reported UV blocking); no contact lens. The contralateral eye was patched without a c...
